Purpose : This study aims to analyze the characteristics of dysphagia of older adults who suffer from neurologic disorders by using a videofluoroscopic test.
Method: The participants of this study consisted of 50 older adults aged 60 to 90 who suffer from dysphagia due to a neurologic disorder. They were evaluated using a videofluoroscopic test to investigate the characteristics of each stage of dysphagia and the frequency of main problems that cause the dysphagia.
Result : As the results of the videofluoroscopic test show, the pharyngeal stage is the most difficult stage, with 48% of the patients showing some disability. As to the direct causes of the swallowing disorder, vallecular and pyriform sinus residue is ranked as the number one, with 70% of the patients having the condition, and an aspiration disorder is ranked as number two, with 52% of the patients suffering.
Conclusion: This study suggests that a direct oro-pharyngeal therapy and diet using a thick liquid food are important for the dysphagia of older adults with neurologic disorders.
